Fireworks are deeply rooted in Malta’s past and form an intrinsic part of the Maltese village feast, which in 2023 was recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In 2002, the Malta Tourism Authority organised a national fireworks festival, later opening it to international participants as the Malta International Fireworks Festival. This annual event showcases Malta’s pyrotechnic tradition and excellence, offering a cultural tourism experience that appeals to diverse audiences.

Contemporary pyrotechnic displays increasingly incorporate digital technologies, enabling complex choreography with music and lighting effects. In 2025, Malta became the first European nation to authorise the launch of fireworks from drones. That year, a spectacular synchronised display featuring 550 drones above the Grand Harbour brought the Malta International Fireworks Festival to a close.
