‘2010 Swimming European Championships’ collector coin

On 30 July 2010, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued a silver collector coin ‘Úszó-Európa-bajnokság, 2010’ (2010 Swimming European Championships) with a face value of HUF 5,000, to celebrate the 30th LEN European Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming and Open Water Swimming Championships.

The collector coin was designed by Attila Rónay. In addition to the standard design elements (the value : ‘5000 FORINT’, the legend: ‘MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG’ (REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY), the year of issue: 2010 and the mint mark: BP.), the obverse of the coin features lines symbolising the racing lanes of a swimming pool, which form into two water wave motifs.

The reverse of the coin has as its main motif a representation of a swimmer, with the inscription ‘2010 BUDAPEST BALATONFÜRED’ placed above it, referring to the host cities of the Championships.

The main motif and the inscription above it are framed by wave lines appearing as each other’s mirror images. The surface of the lower wave lines has been specially finished. As a result, light running through the surface gives the impression of waves rolling on the water when tilting the coin in hand.

The legend on the rim of the reverse reads title of the Championships in Hungarian: ‘ÚSZÓ, MŰÚSZÓ, MŰUGRÓ ÉS NYÍLTVÍZI ÚSZÓ EURÓPA-BAJNOKSÁG’. The mark of designer Attila Rónay is positioned in the lower part of the coin, to the right of the wave lines.

The collector coin is struck in .925 fine silver. It is 38.61 mm in diameter and weighs 31.46 grams, and has a milled edge.

The mintage limit is 10,000 pieces, of which 6,000 pieces are produced using the special proof technology.

The coins will be on sale from 2 August 2010 at the coin shop of the Hungarian Mint in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank’s Visitor Centre (Szabadság tér 8-9, Budapest), and also available at its website www.coins.hu.
