www.reuters.com hat geschrieben:PARIS (Reuters) - French designer Philippe Starck, creator of chic hotels, high-tech lamps and modernistic furniture, turned his hand to the world of hard currency with the design of a new euro coin to mark France's EU presidency.

Inside a workshop at the French Mint Coin Museum in Paris, Starck and Finance Minister Christine Lagarde operated a hulking machine to mint the first run.

The two euro coins are stamped with the year 2008 and the initials of the French republic, which takes up the 27-member EU's six-month rotating presidency on July 1.

Famous for interiors that included the private apartments of former Socialist President Francois Mitterrand, and products such as the spider-like Juicy Salif fruit juicer, Starck also developed inexpensive collections for American retailer Target.

The 20 million new coins will go into circulation on July 1 and be valid currency in the 15 euro zone countries as well as other areas where the euro is used.

Die Gedenkmünzen weisen die gleichen technischen Merkmale auf wie die üblichen Euro-Umlaufmünzen, sind jedoch auf der nationalen Seite mit einem Gedenkmotiv versehen.

(2008/C 165/03) Euro coins intended for circulation are legal tender throughout the euro area. For the purpose of informing the public and all parties involved who handle the coins, the Commission publishes a description of the designs of all new coins (1). In accordance with the Council conclusions of 8 December 2003 (2), euro-area
Member States and those countries that have concluded a Monetary Agreement with the Community providing for the issuance of euro coins intended for circulation are allowed to issue certain quantities of commemorative euro coins for circulation on condition that not more than one new coin design is issued
per country per year and that only the 2-euro denomination is used. These coins have the technical features of normal euro circulation coins, but bear a commemorative design on the national face.
