Mint of Finland will use the winner to mint the next collector coin to be issued at Heureka on October 20. All visitors to the Mint of Finland website may participate in the vote. All voters will participate in a raffle for a Children and creativity collector coin and jewellery made by Mint of Finland.
The Collector Coin committee to modernise traditions in Finland
The Collector Coin committee will modernise the traditional procedure by allowing the public to select the collector coin design by voting for their favourites among those pre-selected by the committee. Until now, the theme for the collector coin has always been chosen by The Collector Coin committee established by the Finnish Ministry of Finance.
The Collector Coin committee consists of permanent members and the experts they have invited to participate on the committee. The committee is chaired by Professor Yrjö Sotamaa of the University of Art and Design. The permanent members of the committee include Mint of Finland Ltd.'s Managing Director Maarit Aarni-Sirviö, Senior Budget Secretary Marja Kirppu from the Ministry of Finance, docent Maria Lähteenmäki from the University of Helsinki and curator Heikki Halme of the Ateneum Art Museum.
Competing artworks designed by students from high schools of the visual arts
The competing artworks were done by students at the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of the Visual Arts, the Kajaani Upper Secondary School, the Lapinlahti Upper Secondary School, the Savonlinna Senior Secondary School of Art and the Tiirismaa Upper Secondary School in Lahti.
Of the 48 works submitted for the competition, the Children and creativity collector coin jury chose 11 artworks for the public vote. "The winner was to be chosen among 10 candidates. However, the level of the artwork submitted was extremely high, which is why we chose one extra work as well," says Yrjö Sotamaa, Chairman of The Collector Coin committee. A scholarship is granted to each high school of the arts. In addition, the three most popular works will all receive an award.
Creativity – a child's right
The Children and creativity collector coin is a part of the Ethical collector coins set. Creativity is mankind's most valuable asset – it leads to a good life and a healthy society and culture. Children must be encouraged to think and express themselves creatively.
The design competition for the ethical collector coin has emphasised vision and message instead of technical know-how. The Children and creativity collector coin competition jury includes the following expert members: special expert Sara Park from UNICEF, Communications Manager Liisa Partio from the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and Executive Manager Erja Väyrynen from the Finnish art teachers' union Kuvataideopettajat ry.

For the first time, a collector coin’s theme was selected by public vote. Between May 18 and June 18, 2010, visitors to Mint of Finland’s website were able to vote for their favourite design from among 11 potential coin designs to help choose the theme of the Children and Creativity collector coin. All competing artworks were created by students at fine art high schools. 48 designs participated in the competition.
Towards the Impossible and Beyond
The winning design, Taivaanrannan tuolla puolen (Over the Horizon) was designed by Roope Määttä, an art student at the Kajaani Upper Secondary School.
“I think creativity is aspiring to the impossible and seeing beyond it. Taivaanrannan tuolla puolen depicts a moment when an impossible thing comes to pass, and another is reached for. My design also shows that one should always remembers one’s roots,” Määttä says.
The runner-up was Hiekkaleikkejä (Sand Games), a design by Jonna Poutiainen, a student at the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of the Visual Arts. Tutkiva luovuus (Investigative Creativity) by Katri Piri, a student at the Tiirismaa Upper Secondary School in Lahti, won third place.

Ricky Rapper (actor Severi Heikkilä) discovers the manufacture of money
A Children and Creativity collector coin along with pieces of jewellery made at Mint of Finland were raffled among the participants in the vote for the Children and Creativity coin’s theme. The raffle was supervised by Severi Heikkilä from the children’s movie Ricky Rapper and the Bicycle Thief.
In addition to the raffle, Heikkilä also discovered the manufacture of money. Heikkilä was granted a special licence to mint a silver collector coin. “I thank you for the honour of letting me visit Mint of Finland,” Heikkilä said. Upon seeing the silver farewell gift, Heikkilä’s eyes welled in astonishment: “Is this actually made of real silver?”
Ricky Rapper and the Bicycle Thief premiered on February 12, 2010. The movie is still being shown in theatres, and so far it has been seen by 316,674 people. The movie will be available in DVD in November.
