The Central Bank of Malta intends to issue a new numismatic coin as part of the Europa Programme 2010, towards the end of June 2010. This coin will be available in gold and silver versions and depicts a detail from the Auberge d’Italie, which is situated in Merchants Street Valletta. This Auberge was built by Gerolamo Cassar in 1571 and today houses the offices of the Malta Tourism Authority.

The coin will be produced in two versions:

SILVER version
Face value: €10
Diameter: 38.61mm
Weight: 28.28 grms
Alloy: 0.925
Quality: Proof

GOLD version
Face Value: €50
Diameter: 21mm
Weight: 6.5 grms
Alloy: 0.916
Quality: Proof

Retailers interested in acquiring large quantities (over 50 coins) are kindly requested to register their interest by sending an email to mcdc@centralbankmalta.org by not later than end of business Friday 21 May 2010 indicating the amounts they intend to purchase. Allocated quantities will be duly confirmed to retailers who will need to make a deposit of 25% of the total invoice amount to secure their order.

Issue of collector coins featuring the Auberge d’Italie
The Central Bank of Malta has issued a silver and a gold coin with the theme Auberge d’Italie as part of the Europa Programme 2010 - Cultural Heritage.

The obverse of the coins shows the Emblem of Malta with the year of issue 2010. The reverse depicts a detail from the façade of the Auberge d’Italie, the marble-clad central element ornamented by a trophy of martial figures supporting the bronze bust of Grand Master Giorgio Carafa (1680-1690) with his coat of arms below it. The Auberge, situated in Merchants Street in Valletta, houses the offices of the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, the Environment and Culture and the Malta Tourism Authority. The Europa Star, which is the official logo of the programme, is also shown on the reverse side of the coins.

These numismatic coins were minted at the Royal Dutch Mint with the following specifications:

Face Value: €10; €50
Metal: Silver; Gold
Finesse: 0.925; 0.916
Weight: 28.28 (gr); 6.5(gr)
Diameter: 38.61 (mm); 21 (mm)
Edition Limit: 12,500; 3,000

The silver coin is available for sale at the price of €44, while the gold coin carries a price of €269 (inclusive of VAT). These coins may be purchased from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre, Central Bank of Malta, Pjazza Kastilja, Valletta, or via the Bank's website: http://www.centralbankmalta.org under the Currency section. Mal sehen, wie die Originale aussehen. Die Entwürfe sind ja noch nicht so aussagekräftig und detailliert.
