Coins beckon you into the nature
Even if Nordic people live downtown and spend their days indoors, nature is always near in these parts. And yet we do not always remember to delight in the enormous richness of species around us and the landscape that changes its appearance with the turn of the seasons. The new Nordic Nature set of coins reminds us of the most fantastic features of our diverse environment and celebrates the unity of nature and man in the North.
Three coins immortalise the greatest features of Nordic nature
Nature is a fitting subject for coin motifs, since metal coinage is a highly ecological payment method. Coins are commonly made of metal melted down from old coins, and they can last up to 30 years in circulation. The Nordic Nature coin set has also been packaged into coin pouches manufactured from recycled materials for the Mint of Finland by Globe Hope.
In its design, the first commemorative coin in the set, entitled Flora, features a Glacier Crowfoot – a hardy plant especially famous for its ability to blossom in the snow. The fauna of the North will also receive its own commemorative coin, depicting the paw marks left by an Arctic Fox in gentle snowfall. The third coin in the series immortalises the beautiful winter of the North, when the white snows are lit by blazing auroras and the bright starry sky. Responsible for the coins' look is the grand old man of Finnish coin design, Reijo Paavilainen, whose work has charmed both coin aficionados and the Collector Coin Committee responsible for coin design competitions over the years.
The Mint of Finland encourages children and families to exercise
This autumn, nature is full of treasures not only in its riot of colour, but also thanks to the Mint of Finland. The TV programme Elixir, focusing on exercise and wellness, will launch the Elixir Hidden Treasure nature adventure in cooperation with the Mint of Finland. The event encourages families to exercise in the autumn nature. In every episode, broadcast on Nelonen on Sundays, famous athletes will hide a treasure in the lap of nature for children and the young at heart to find. Once the Nordic Nature coin set has been released, the Mint of Finland will donate a set to each child to be the first to find a treasure – every proper treasure contains a hoard of coins after all! Elixir on Nelonen, every Sunday at 11.15 a.m.
The Nordic Nature coin set will be available in the Mint of Finland's online Outlet Store from 1 October. The coins are available for purchase as sets of three proof-quality coins, or as individual BU-quality pieces.

Finnland würdigt die nordische Natur in diesem Jahr mit 5-Euro-Sammlermünzen. Die Mint of Finland prägt eine Serie von drei Münzen, die der Vielfalt der Natur gewidmet ist. Die Natur hat den Bewohnern der nordischen Länder von jeher viel bedeutet. Sie sicherte den Lebensunterhalt und bot gegebenenfalls sogar eine Möglichkeit, sich vor der Welt zu verstecken.
Weil der Norden vergleichsweise dünn besiedelt ist, ist die Natur für die meisten Menschen im täglichen Leben präsent. Vielleicht zieht es uns deshalb auch in der Freizeit in die Natur. Wandern, Zelten und die Gaben des Waldes haben in unserer Kultur einen festen Platz. Auch die Städter schöpfen daraus Kraft.
Die nordische Natur, die vielerorts noch sauber und unberührt ist, zeichnet sich durch eine reiche Flora und Fauna aus. Vier Jahreszeiten bieten uns gute Möglichkeiten, verschiedene Tier- und Pflanzenarten zu beobachten. So füllt zum Beispiel im Frühjahr die Rückkehr der Zugvögel die Küsten mit Leben.
Die letzte Eiszeit, die vor rund 10 000 Jahren zu Ende ging, hat unübersehbare Spuren hinterlassen. Nachdem der Norden 100 000 Jahre lang von Eis bedeckt gewesen war, begann sich das Land mit seinem Abschmelzen zu heben. Dieses Phänomen hält weiterhin an. Die vom Meer glatt geschliffenen Uferfelsen, die
Gletschermühlen und andere Kunstwerke der Eiszeit erzählen Geschichten, die viele Jahrtausende alt sind.

Grünes Land und strahlendes Nordlicht
Die 5-Euro-Sammlermünzen zum Thema „Nordische Natur“, die aus unedlen Metallen hergestellt werden, zeigen die Vielfalt unserer Umgebung. Der nordischen Flora ist eine eigene Sammlermünze gewidmet. Ihr Motiv ist der schöne Gletscher-Hahnenfuß. Die Sammlermünze mit Tiermotiv symbolisiert die Unberührtheit der Natur. Wer im Winter durch den Wald streift, entdeckt im Schnee vielleicht die Spuren eines Polarfuchses – bis der nächste Schneefall sie langsam wieder zudeckt. Eine Münze der Serie erinnert an den dunklen Winter im hohen Norden, den der strahlende Schein des Nordlichts am Himmel erhellt.

Karge Schönheit zwischen Osten und Westen
Professor Olof Biström (in der Abbildung) vom naturwissenschaftlichen Zentralmuseum gehörte dem Ausschuss an, der die Motive der Münzserie „Nordische Natur“ ausgewählt hat. Er schätzt die Unberührtheit der Natur und achtet die Fähigkeit der heimischen Tier- und Pflanzenarten, sich an die wechselnden Bedingungen anzupassen.
Was macht die nordische Natur so einzigartig?
In der nordischen Natur gibt es unterschiedlichste Lebensräume, von Bergen bis zur Seenlandschaft. In Verbindung mit dem Einfluss des warmen Golfstroms hat das die Entwicklung einer großen Artenvielfalt ermöglicht. Darüber hinaus ist unsere Natur eine interessante Mischung von Ost und West. Der Artenbestand im Süden Schwedens und Norwegens spiegelt die einstige Verbindung zum europäischen Festland wider, während nach Finnland Arten aus dem Osten eingewandert sind. Die Natur im Norden Fennoskandinaviens weicht stark von den südlichen Regionen ab.
Seit wann sieht die nordische Natur so aus wie jetzt?
Das Eis verschwand vor rund 9000 Jahren. Doch auch danach hat sich das Klima von Zeit zu Zeit verändert. In einer wärmeren Phase wuchsen in Finnland zum Beispiel Ulmen und Nusssträucher. Fichte und Kiefer kehrten vor etwa 2500 Jahren als Hauptbaumarten zurück. Sie verleihen der nordischen Natur ihr unverkennbares, karg-schönes Gesicht.

The pearl of the heartland - Flora
The rare glacier crowfoot thrives in severe conditions, so its ability to bloom even through snow brings a sense of fragility to the majestic fjeld landscape. In the coin, the crowfoot is framed by moss and lichen. Each Nordic season offers surprises and beauty; one must only decide to stop and look for them. The coin reminds us to gaze at the wonders of nature from close proximity and wait for the unexpected – like a small flower blooming in snow.

The fearless ones of the North - Fauna
Countless animals have adapted to the changing Nordic conditions over thousands of years, each in their own way. While birds fly south towards the warmth, bears fall into deep hibernation. But nature never slows down completely even during winter. The song of the great tit, for example, cheers up most if not all nature lovers during winter. There are also more inconspicuous travellers in nature. As the brand side of the coin shows, the paw trail left by the arctic fox can quickly be covered under a flurry of snow.

The guardian of the Nordic night sky - Winter
The Nordic winter does not lack colour or glow. The darkness of the winter nights provides us an opportunity to wonder at the North Star, sometimes called the fitting in the sky ceiling. The star is located near the celestial pole, which creates the impression that other stars rotate around it. The image side of the coin depicts northern lights along with other stars dancing below the North Star. The colourful glow of the northern lights is caused when solar winds collide with the earth’s atmosphere. The northern lights light up the journeys of northern travellers especially during the darkest time of winter.
