Hokkaido coin to mark G8 summit
Kyodo News
A ¥1,000 coin bearing the design of Hokkaido's Lake Toya, the site of this year's Group of Eight summit, and Japanese red-crowned cranes, a symbol of Hokkaido, will be issued in time for the July 7-9 summit, the government said Tuesday.
The coin will be the first of 94 types — ¥500 and ¥1,000 coins for each of the 47 prefectures — to be minted over the next eight years to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the enforcement of the Local Autonomy Law, the Finance Ministry said.
The ¥1,000 coin for Hokkaido will be sterling, weigh 31.1 grams and measure 40 mm in diameter. Six colors will be used to depict two cranes and the lake, the ministry said. A total of 100,000 coins will be minted.
The reverse of the coin will have a uniform design for all 47 prefectures, featuring snow crystals, cherry blossoms and a crescent moon.
Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga said the coin will be presented to G8 delegates at the Hokkaido summit to raise their awareness about environmental problems.
Although the coin's face value is ¥1,000, its sales price will be set at ¥6,000 because of high production costs. Japan Mint will sell the coin via mail order and it will come in a lacquered box made of Japanese cypress, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, a ¥500 coin bearing the design of Lake Toya and a former building of the Hokkaido government will be introduced in December along with commemorative coins for Kyoto and Shimane prefectures
