United States Mint Announces New Quarter Designs for 2009

New Quarter Program Honors District of Columbia and United States Territories

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today announced six new designs that will grace the quarters issued next year to honor the District of Columbia and the five United States territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, United States Virgin Islands and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The coins will be put into circulation in approximately two-month intervals throughout the year.

The designs on the reverse (tails side) of the 2009 quarters feature unique, rotating images emblematic of the District of Columbia and each of the territories. The coins will continue to bear the standard inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM and the year, 2009.

The quarter honoring the District of Columbia debuts in late January 2009. The coin's reverse design features an image of celebrated musician Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington seated at a piano with the inscriptions, DUKE ELLINGTON and JUSTICE FOR ALL, the District's official motto. The District of Columbia quarter reverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.



The second quarter of 2009, honoring the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, depicts a sentry box in Old San Juan overlooking the sea with a hibiscus, Puerto Rico's official flower. Isla del Encanto (Island of Enchantment) is also inscribed on the reverse. The Puerto Rico quarter reverse was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.



The third quarter of 2009, honoring the territory of Guam, includes an outline of the island of Guam, a latte stone-once used as building support in ancient Chamorro society-and a flying proa (a native boat). Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro (Guam, Land of the Chamorro) is also inscribed on the coin's reverse. The Guam quarter reverse was designed by United States Mint AIP Associate Designer David Westwood and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz.



The fourth quarter of 2009 honors the territory of American Samoa. The reverse design features the ava bowl, whisk and staff used in special Samoan ceremonies. SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA (Samoa, God is First), the official motto of American Samoa, is inscribed on the reverse. The American Samoa quarter reverse was designed by United States Mint AIP Master Designer Stephen Clark and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers.



The fifth quarter of 2009 honors the territory of the United States Virgin Islands. The reverse design features the three major islands that comprise the territory with a Banana Quit (the official bird), a Yellow Cedar (the official flower) and a Tyre Palm, a tree native to the United States Virgin Islands. United in Pride and Hope, the territory's official motto, is also inscribed on the reverse. The United States Virgin Islands quarter reverse was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.



The last quarter of 2009 honors the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The reverse design features a latte stone on an island with a Carolinian canoe under sail in the lagoon. Two white Fairy Terns (native birds) are depicted in flight together overhead with a Carolinian Mwar (head lei) comprised of plumeria, langilang (ylang ylang), angagha (peacock flower) and teibwo (pacific basil), framing the design. The Northern Mariana Islands quarter reverse was designed by United States Mint AIP Master Designer Richard Masters and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.



The obverse (heads side) of all six 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters will continue to display the familiar image of George Washington originally designed by Sculptor John Flanagan in 1932 and modified by former United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver William Cousins in 1999. The inscription "In God We Trust" will continue to appear on the obverse of the quarter, as well as the words "United States of America," "Quarter Dollar," and "Liberty."

The 2009 quarters will be issued into circulation in quantities to meet the needs of the United States, both for commerce and collectors. In addition to producing sufficient quantities of circulating coins to meet the Nation's demand, the Department of the Treasury has the authority to mint and issue uncirculated and proof coins, as well as a 90 percent silver version of each coin. These numismatic versions will be included in the United States Mint's annual product offerings.

United States Mint 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set™ Available March 23


WASHINGTON - Collectors can begin placing their orders for the United States Mint 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set at noon Eastern Time (ET) on March 23, 2009. The set, priced at $29.95, includes all six commemorative quarter-dollars scheduled for minting and release this year. The coins, struck in 90% silver, honor the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Proof coins are produced at the United States Mint at San Francisco using specially prepared, highly polished dies. Specially treated coin blanks are struck multiple times to ensure the finest detail in a frosted cameo image on a brilliant, mirror-like background. The coins-each bearing the S mint mark for San Francisco-are sealed in a protective lens that is inserted into a specially printed box. A United States Mint Certificate of Authenticity is included.

At noon Eastern Time the same day, customers can begin ordering coin options featuring the District of Columbia quarter that include a two-roll set and a 100-coin bag, both priced at $32.95, and a 1,000-coin bag priced at $309.95.

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will release millions of commemorative quarter-dollar coins into circulation on March 30, 2009, to honor the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. At noon Eastern Time (ET) the same day, customers can begin ordering two-roll sets (40 coins per roll) that include one roll each from the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver, and bags of 100 and 1,000 coins.

The set, priced at $32.95, contains two rolls of coins wrapped in specially designed United States Mint coin paper that displays a "P" or "D" for the roll's mint of origin, "PR" for Puerto Rico and "$10," representing the roll's dollar value. The bags of 100 coins are offered at $32.95, and the bags of 1,000 coins are offered at $309.95. Each bag is also marked with the mint of origin and the dollar value of its contents. The bags and two-roll sets contain Puerto Rico quarters struck for use in general circulation.

The Puerto Rico quarter is the second released under the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program. United States Mint Releases Guam Commemorative Quarter May 26


WASHINGTON - Collectors may begin placing their orders for bags and rolls of Guam commemorative quarter-dollar coins on May 26, at noon Eastern Time. The bags and rolls contain general circulating quality coins struck on the production floors at the United States Mint facilities at Denver and Philadelphia.

The bags of Guam quarters are packaged in 100-coin bags ($32.95) and 1,000-coin bags ($309.95). Each bag has a tag identifying the mint of origin and "GU."

The two-roll sets ($32.95) include one roll each of 40 coins bearing the "D" and "P" mint marks. The distinctive packaging displays the mint of origin, "GU" and the dollar value of the contents.

Both options display the genuine United States Mint logo.

The Guam quarter-the third coin in the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program-is scheduled for release by the Federal Reserve on May 26. The coin's reverse (tails side) design depicts the outline of the island, a flying proa (a seagoing craft built by the Chamorro people), and a latte stone (an architectural element used as the base of homes). Inscriptions on the coin's reverse include GUAM and Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro, which means "Guam - Land of the Chamorro."

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will accept orders for numismatic products containing the United States Virgin Islands commemorative quarter-dollar coin beginning noon Eastern Time (ET) September 28. The options, available for approximately 10 weeks, include a two-roll set containing 40 coins per roll and bags of 100 and 1,000 coins.

The two-roll set, priced at $32.95, includes one roll each of coins from the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver wrapped in specially designed paper coin wrap. The packaging is marked with a "P" or "D" representing the mint of origin, "$10" representing its dollar value and "VI," the United States Postal Code for the United States Virgin Islands. The 100-coin bags, also priced at $32.95, and the 1,000-coin bags, priced at $309.95, are marked with the mint of origin and the dollar value of its contents ($25 or $250). Both the bags and the two-roll sets feature quarters used in regular circulation.
