The Croatian National Bank, in collaboration with the Croatian Mint, is issuing a new collector coins to mark the 200th anniversary of the Samobor Carnival, one of the oldest and most renowned carnival events in Croatia.

The “200th Anniversary of the Samobor Carnival” collector issue, part of the “Croatian Heritage” series, will be available for purchase from 9:00 a.m. on 5 February 2026.

For almost two centuries, the Samobor Carnival has transformed the town each year into a place where everything is allowed—except excessive seriousness. Since the first recorded Carnival in 1827, the town of Samobor has upheld a tradition in which authority is symbolically handed over to the carnival characters, and laughter, satire, and a generous dose of irony become the official protocol. The Carnival season is a period when everyday life is viewed through humour, and truth is often expressed more boldly than during the rest of the year.

Guardians of this tradition include characters such as the Prince of the Carnival, the Judge, and the Fiscal, with a special place reserved for the Magpie – sharp-witted, curious, and always well-informed. As a symbol of the carnival spirit, the Magpie “sees everything, hears everything, and forgets nothing”, making her role far more than decorative. She is the voice of the people, conveying criticism and witty remarks, and an indispensable witness to all the triumphs and mishaps of the Carnival.

The author of the design Karlo Gross, has chosen the Magpie as the central motif, capturing the freedom of speech, sharpness, and lively spirit that the Samobor Carnival has celebrated for 200 years.

The coins minted in Brilliant Uncirculated quality are available in four versions:

- 1/2 ounce gold coin, face value 50 € (limited to 200 pieces)
- 1/8 ounce gold coin, face value 20 € (limited to 500 pieces)
- 1 ounce silver coin, face value 4 € (limited to 1,500 pieces)
- 5 ounce silver coin, coloured, face value 8 € (limited to 300 pieces)
