Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Program 2009

Beitrag von dbl »

:hi:
Authorized by Public Law 109-145, the four new designs celebrate the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth, as well as the 100th anniversary of the production of the Lincoln cent (penny). The new designs will be issued in approximately three-month intervals throughout the year. The first redesigned penny, which will honor Lincoln’s birth and early childhood, will be put into circulation on February 12, 2009.

The four designs to be featured on the reverse of the Lincoln pennies represent four major aspects of President Lincoln’s life: his birth and childhood in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his Presidency in Washington, D.C. The inscriptions on the reverse of the coins will be “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum” and “One Cent.”

The obverse (heads side) of the one-cent coins will continue to bear Victor David Brenner’s likeness of President Lincoln, introduced in 1909, and the motto “In God We Trust.” At the end of the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Coin Program, the reverse of the penny will feature a design emblematic of President Lincoln’s preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country.

Coin News hat geschrieben:The first newly designed Lincoln cent in 50 years was officially launched into circulation Thursday morning at Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky.
In total, four new circulating cents will be issued in 2009 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abe’s birth and the 100th anniversary of Lincoln cent first issued in 1909.

The first coin released Thursday depicts a log cabin, which represents Lincoln’s birth and early childhood in Kentucky

The rest of the public may be waiting some time before seeing new pennies in purses and pockets. It could take weeks or months for some local banks to start ordering and receiving the coins from the Federal Reserve.

The first minted 1909 Lincoln cents were made from 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. Metal costs increased through the years resulting in later cost-saving measures with the Mint changing the pennies’ composition to today’s less expensive copper-plated zinc — each cent is now struck from 99.2 percent zinc and 0.8% copper.

As part of the anniversary celebration this year, the Mint said Thursday it will issue collector versions of the bicentennial cents that contain the same metallic content as the 1909 coins. Collectors will have to wait, however, as the coins will only be minted in proof and uncirculated conditions, and will only be included in the United States Mint’s annual 2009 product offerings yet to be released.

Program Information:

In the fall of 1816, Thomas and Nancy Lincoln left Kentucky for southern Indiana, settling in Spencer County. As he grew older, young Abraham became skilled at using a plow and, especially, an axe. Although the demands of frontier life left little time for formal schooling, his parents instilled in him a love for books and Abraham educated himself by reading such works as Life of Washington, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Robinson Crusoe and The Arabian Nights, all by the age of 11. He could often be seen carrying a book along with his axe.

In April 1837, Abraham Lincoln settled in the new Illinois state capital, Springfield, where he met and married Mary Todd. Their first child, Robert Todd Lincoln, was born in August 1843. Lincoln won election to the U.S. House of Representatives as a member of the Whig Party in 1846.

Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas was up for re-election in 1858, and in June the state Republican convention nominated Lincoln for the seat. The series of famous Lincoln-Douglas debates took place that fall, and while he did not win the seat, Lincoln's logic, moral fervor, elegant language and debating skills transformed him into a national figure. At the 1860 Republican convention, he secured the nomination for President and was elected that fall.

Bezug nehmend auf den höheren Kupferanteil in diesem Jahr hat die US Mint ihren unzirkulierten Münzsätzen folgende Information
beigelegt:

"Given the metallic composition used for the 2009 uncirculated one-cent coins - the same used for the original 1909 Lincoln Cents - the alloy readily tarnishes. The United States Mint has used anti-tarnish treatments to minimize this impact on the appearance of the uncirculated coins. However, the alloy used for the one-cent coins in this year's uncirculated coin set is expected to tarnsih more over time than the previous years' plated zinc one-cent coins."

Program Information:

When Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861, the Nation was already on the verge of civil war, and fighting soon broke out at Fort Sumter, S.C. Shortly after the Battle of Antietam, in late 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all slaves in rebel territory free as of January 1, 1863. The Union victory at Gettysburg, Pa., on July 3, 1863, marked a crucial turning point in the war in favor of the North.

On April 14, 1865, President Lincoln was mortally wounded by an assassin, John Wilkes Booth, while watching a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington. Army physicians worked to save him throughout the night, but he never regained consciousness and died at 7:22 a.m. the next morning at the age of 56.
