The Symbol of the Baltic Sea to be Designed by Secondary School Students
Our concern regarding the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea will inspire young artists this spring. Secondary school students from the Baltic Sea region will design the ethical commemorative coin for 2011. Its theme is the protection of the Baltic Sea. The contest began on 25 March 2011 and will end on 3 June 2011.
Mint of Finland's ethical collector coin for 2011 will be designed by secondary school students invited to participate in the contest. Students from the following high schools of the visual arts in Finland and the Baltic Sea states have been invited to participate in the contest.
In Finland, participating schools include the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of the Visual Arts, the Juhana Herttua High School, the Kajaani Upper Secondary School, the Lapinlahti Senior High School and Senior High School in Visual Arts; the Savonlinna Senior Secondary School of Art and the Tammerkoski High School in Russia; Petrozavodsk Art School No. 1 in Sweden; the Kulturama Gymnasium in Estonia; Tallinna Kunstigümnaasium and the Klaipeda Eduardas Balsys Gymnasium of Arts in Lithuania, and the Liepāja Secondary School of Art in Latvia.
Winner to be Selected by the Public
Each school may submit ten works to the Collector Coin Committee. The Collector Coin Committee will pre-select the ten best works.
The pre-selected works will be published on Mint of Finland's website. After this, the public will vote for the one it likes the best. Visitors to Mint of Finland's website will select a theme for the Protecting the Baltic Sea collector coin by voting for their favourite design in June. The collector coin will be issued in October 2011.
The Endangered Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is in need of international protection. The sea’s vulnerability is owed to its fundamental features: it is a low, cold, brackish inland sea. The problems of the Baltic Sea are a concern for all countries in the region.
The eutrophication caused by loads of nitrogen and phosphorus and the resulting oxygen deficiencies in water masses is the worst threat to the Baltic Sea. Eutrophication also endangers marine species and poses a threat to the livelihoods and recreational activities practiced along the coast.
Ethical Collector Coins Transmit Values from One Generation to the Next
Ethical collector coins have a universal theme promoted by the collector coins. Collector coins transmit an important message and values to us and to future generations.
Collector coins previously issued in the Ethical Collector Coin series include the Peace and Security collector coin (2009) and the Children and Creativity collector coin (2010).

What is your Baltic Sea like? Glimmering waves, bold sea birds, salty wind – what does the Baltic Sea mean to you? Secondary school students from the Baltic Sea region have pondered upon this during the spring and now it is everybody else’s turn to do the same. The theme for the Protecting the Baltic Sea commemorative coin will be chosen by the public. Vote for your favourite among the students’ artworks on Mint of Finland’s website from 15 June to 22 August.
Mint of Finland will produce the Protecting the Baltic Sea commemorative coin based on the artwork receiving the most votes. The coin will be issued in October. The Protecting the Baltic Sea commemorative coin is the third coin to be published in the Ethical collector coins series.
All visitors to the Mint of Finland website may participate in the vote. All voters will participate in a raffle for three Protecting the Baltic Sea commemorative coins.
Common responsibility reflected in the artworks
The theme for the 2011 ethical commemorative coin is chosen among the secondary school students’ artworks selected to the design contest. Students from high schools of the visual arts in Finland and the Baltic Sea states were invited to participate in the contest.
The Collector Coin Committee pre-selected the eleven best works for public vote. The committee thanks the schools for participating in the contest and characterises the contest as high-level and refreshing.
”These youngsters have managed to encapsulate the message of protecting the Baltic Sea in their pieces in a way that appeals to one’s feelings. The expression in the pieces was brave and fresh and they convey a genuine concern and a common responsibility, but also joy for the Baltic Sea” says Yrjö Sotamaa, Chairman of the Committee on Collector Coins.
As expert members in the Protecting the Baltic Sea collector coin jury were Sinikka Mäntysalo-Lamppu from the Finnish Children’s Parliament and Susanna Moini from Kestävä Ltd.
In Finland, participating schools included the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of the Visual Arts, the Juhana Herttua High School, the Kajaani Upper Secondary School, the Lapinlahti Senior High School and Senior High School in Visual Arts; the Savonlinna Senior Secondary School of Art and the Tammerkoski High School in Russia; Petrozavodsk Art School No. 1 in Sweden; the Kulturama Gymnasium in Estonia; Tallinna Kunstigümnaasium and the Klaipeda Eduardas Balsys Gymnasium of Arts in Lithuania, and the Liepāja Secondary School of Art in Latvia.

Celebrating a sea that has many faces The commemorative coin passes the message from one generation to another of what is important to us. The campaign for the protection of the Baltic Sea will get a new symbol on 31 October. Voters from around the world chose the design by Kajaani high-school student Essi Kulju, "Life at sea", for the Baltic Sea-themed collector coin.
The design for the ethical collector coin was chosen by public vote from a selection of entries from high-school students for the second year in a row. This year, high school students from many countries around the Baltic Sea were invited to send their designs in for the competition. The competition entries included some magnificent designs sent in from as far away as Russia.
The public were able to vote for their favourite design from 15 June to 22 August on Mint of Finland's website. Traditionally the Collector Coin Committee, which is organised by the Finnish Ministry of Finance, has chosen the winning design but this time vote was given over to the public.
A fresh look at the cycle of life
Essi Kulju, who is a second-year student of the arts at Kajaani senior high school, created a design that won an overwhelming majority of the public vote. Kulju says that her design reflects the cycle of life, and she modestly tells that the victory came as a surprise to her. However, Kulju's teachers were not at all surprised.
"The artwork is simple and fresh - it conveys a young person's fresh outlook on life. The coin's obverse side shows how people use the Baltic Sea while the reverse side speaks of the importance of the sea to nature," noted Jaana Toivonen and Hannele Pussinen, art and craft teachers at Kajaani senior high school.
Ethical art from Kainuu
It was the second year in a row that the Ethical collector coin design competition was won by an art student from Kajaani senior high school. Last year, the public voted for another Kajaani resident Roope Määttä's design as the winning look for the Children and Creativity collector coin.
What's more, second and third place also went to budding Kajaani artists. Second place in the Protecting the Baltic Sea collector coin design competition went to Henriikka Hänninen for her entry, "Cycle". Third prize was claimed by Aino Soininen for her piece, "Playing with water".
Headmistress of Kajaani senior high school Anna-Maija Palo says that the secret to her school's success is an encouraging and supportive teaching style.
"Our teaching in art and crafts has been praised for the fact that our students are encouraged to find their own style. We don't want to pigeonhole our students into certain styles," says Palo.
Kulju's competition-winning design will be minted onto the coin and she will receive a prize of 2,000 euros. The prize for second-placed Hänninen is 1,000 euros and third-placed Soininen will get 500 euros.

Mint of Finland's 2011 ethical collector coin commemorates the world's second largest brackish-water basin - the Baltic Sea
The organic Protecting the Baltic Sea collector coin is made using recycled silver and comes packaged in a recycled-cardboard case or a glass Vitriini box.
Over the last decades natural disasters have reminded us of the vulnerability of nature, even here in the Baltic Sea region. The Baltic Sea is in need of international protection. The sea’s vulnerability is owed to its fundamental features: it is a low, cold, brackish inland sea.
The problems of the Baltic Sea are a concern for all countries in the region. The Baltic Sea is enclosed by Finland, Sweden, Russia, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.
Our beautiful sea needs protection
The eutrophication caused by loads of nitrogen and phosphorus and the resulting oxygen deficiencies in water masses is the worst threat to the Baltic Sea. Eutrophication also endangers marine species and poses a threat to the livelihoods and recreational activities practiced throughout the Baltic Sea. The strong growth in shipping traffic and especially oil transportation also poses a serious threat.
Man was causing extinction and irreparable change to living organisms in the Baltic Sea region as early as in the Stone Age. These days we load the Baltic Sea with farming runoff, municipal waste water, phosphate-rich washing detergents and litter. However, successful steps have been made to protect the Baltic Sea, such as by sanitising the municipal waste waters from the St Petersburg area.
The third Ethical Collector Coin
After a public vote, the winning design chosen for the Protecting the Baltic Sea collector coin was by art student Essi Kulju from Kajaani. It is the third in the Ethical collector coins series, which, in 2010, saw the release of the Children and Creativity collector coin and, in 2009, the Peace and Security collector coin.
The Protecting the Baltic Sea collector coin comes with a certificate of authenticity, which explains the story behind the coin and the technical details. The certificate of authenticity is signed by the director of the Marine Research Centre, Professor Mari Walls, and Mint of Finland's CEO, Paul Gustafsson.

Eine wirklich schöne Münze ... - habe sie selber damals auch ausgewählt.
Schade eigentlich, dass ich mein Sammelgebiet nicht auf die finnischen Ag-Münzen ausgedehnt habe ... ;-)
