GOLD DIPTYCH 20 AND 50 EURO – Finds of the Villanovian and Roman Civilizations
The archaeological research in the Republic of San Marino has unearthed various finds, kept at the State Museum of San Marino, leading to a better understanding of the territory, which was home to Villanovian and Roman settlements. The 20 Euro coin features one of the finds which dates back to the Roman era. The foreground shows, in fact, a small bronze statue of Mercury, the protector god of trade. This small bronze, a typical example of provincial Roman art, has been dated to the I - II century AD and was discovered in 1998 in Domagnano, during archaeological excavations of a country settlement dating to the Roman and Late Antiquity period. The 50 Euro coin shows two bronze fibulae, found in the Fiorentino area in 1911, and is datable to the VIII-VII century BC. These are fibulae of the ‘leech’ variety, with an enlarged and slightly lowered arch, lacking both the tongue and the pin; one of them shows no decoration whatsoever, while the other features a series of parallel and zigzag incisions.
