Die 100 Euro aus Finnland für 2008 wird das Thema "Finnischer Krieg und Beginn der Unabhängigkeit 1808/09" tragen.

Heute startete der Designwettbewerb für diese Münze und läuft bis zum 22. August 16:00 Uhr.

Leider sind nur finnische Künstler aufgefordert ihre Beiträge abzugeben.

Wäre bei diesem Thema aber auch verwunderlich wenn es nicht so wäre ;-)

The Finnish war and the birth of autonomy is remembered with a golden collector coin (5.9.2008)
Reijo Paavilainen’s proposal won the high-level design competition

This year, 200 years have passed since the outbreak of the Finnish war that took place 1808 – 1809 between Sweden-Finland and Russia. As a consequence of the war, the many centuries long connection between Finland and Sweden was severed and Finland became an autonomic grand duchy that belonged to the Russian empire. This autumn, a golden coin with a nominal value of 100 euros will be minted based on the themes connected with those years.

The Collector Coin Committee set by the Finnish Ministry of Finance arranged a public competition for the designing of the coin. A total of 14 proposals were received by the deadline of 22nd of August, 2008. The jury considered the standard of the proposals to be high and their power of expression impressive.

The jury especially acknowledged the multiform symbolism of the proposals and their bold approach to the theme. Of all the works sent to the competition, the jury selected the proposal named ”Ajan viemää – Ajan tuomaa”( “Gone with time – come with time”) as the winner. This proposal turned out to be the work of sculptor Reijo Paavilainen, who has won diverse design competitions on many occasions. According to the jury, the theme of the competition, the transfer of Finland from Sweden to Russia, was well considered in Paavilainen’s proposal. In addition, the proposal nicely relays the story of growth; the same picture includes both history and the future. As an entity, the work was considered an artistically successful realization, where recognisable symbols have been used in abstract expressions.

Second prize in the competition was awarded to the proposal ”Panoraama” (“Panorama”), which was also designed by Reijo Paavilainen. Third prize went to the proposal “Vaarallinen suhde” (“Dangerous relation”), designed by Tapio Kettunen. Two further proposals were also rewarded, Erja Tielinen’s “Ajan jäljet” (“Traces of time”) and Reijo Paavilainen’s “Muutos” (“Change”).

The following persons were members of the jury: as chairman Professor Yrjö Sotamaa from the University of Art and Design, and as members Senior Budget Secretary from the Ministry of Finance Ms Marja Kirppu and CEO of Mint of Finland Ltd Maarit Aarni-Sirviö. As art expert members acted Marjukka Korhonen, Jussi T. Lappalainen, Johanna Rope, Raimo Savolainen, and Tauno Tarna. Communications Manager Outi Arola from Mint of Finland Ltd functioned as secretary.

The competition proposals are on display at the Helsinki University of Art and Design during 22nd - 26th September, 2008. The address is Hämeentie 135 C, Helsinki.

Golden collector coin in honour of the anniversary: two hundred years since the Finnish war and the birth of autonomy (14.10.2008)

Mint of Finland Ltd mints on a decree from the Finnish Ministry of Finance a 100 euro golden collector coin in honour of the anniversary year of the Finnish war and the birth of autonomy (1808-1809).

The pictorial motif on the coin designed by artist Reijo Paavilainen, is the passage from Sweden to Russia. The same coin depicts both Finnish history (the withdrawing crown on the reverse side) as well the future of the country (the eagle symbol on the obverse side). The jury of the design competition convened in August and especially acknowledged Paavilainen’s artistic implementation, where a most abstract theme is depicted with recognisable symbols.

The coin has a nominal value of 100 euros and is golden (Au917). It weighs 8.48 grammas and has a diameter of 22.0 millimetres.

The coin is minted to an amount of 9000 pieces and is launched on 27th October, 2008.

In Folge des vor 200 Jahren begonnenen Krieges wurde Finnland ein
dem russischen Zarenreich angegliedertes autonomes
Großfürstentum. Aus Anlass dieses historischen Ereignisses hat die
Finnische Münze gemäß einer Verordnung des finnischen
Finanzministeriums diese Sammlermünze geprägt. Über die
künstlerische Gestaltung der Münze wurde ein Wettbewerb
ausgeschrieben, den der bekannte finnische Bildhauer Reijo
Paavilainen gewonnen hat.
