2 SCUDI GOLD COIN – 300th ANNIVERSARY OF POMPEO BATONI’S BIRTH
The 2 Scudi gold coin issued on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Pompeo Batoni (Lucca 25/01/1708 - Rome 04/02/1787) depicts the masterpiece produced by the Italian painter in 1740, “San Marino risolleva la Repubblica”. A gift of Antonio Ruffo, Prince of La Scaletta and Duke of Artalia, the painting is kept on the first floor of the State Museum of San Marino, and alludes to the happy conclusion of a famous dramatic episode in San Marino’s history: the papal troops’ occupation of the territory by order of Cardinal Alberoni. In the background of the coin are the three towers which have always been the most overt and traditional symbol of the Republic and a cloud of smoke which represents the disastrous period of the occupation. In the foreground the young woman, allegory of the Republic, who is bearing a wooden sceptre, the symbol of a poor “sovereignty” and is looking at San Marino with an afflicted and imploring gaze; meanwhile the Saint is helping her to rise by offering her his right hand while with his left he is pointing to the pageboy who is ready to give her back her helmet, emblem of dominion.
