CBoM hat geschrieben:On Monday 15 October 2012 the Central Bank of Malta will issue the second in the five-year series of €2 Commemorative coins highlighting milestones in Malta’s constitutional history.

Features of the coin
The theme for the second coin is ‘Majority Representation – 1887’. The coin reverse shows the €2 symbol which is a common feature of all euro coins of this denomination. The coin obverse (national side) was designed by the Maltese artist Ġanni Bonnici and shows a jubilant crowd with the Governor’s Palace, in Valletta, in the background. The coins were minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. They will be issued in circulation quality in rolls of 25 coins each, and a limited number will also be issued in proof quality.

Historical note
As a result of the 1849 Constitution, Maltese citizens acquired the right to elect their own representatives on the Council of Government. However such elected members represented only a minority of the Council which was effectively controlled by the Governor, representing the British Government, and his nominated members. Political developments in continental Europe leading to the election of representative governments, were instrumental in generating a similar sentiment in Malta. This process culminated with the passing of the 1887 Constitution whereby the Maltese were allowed to elect the majority of members on the Council of Government. Thus, for the first time the Maltese were given an opportunity to exercise the powers of government in local matters.

Distribution of coin
The Bank will be contacting all those who have placed their orders to inform them of their allocation, the means of payment and the dates on which they can collect their coins. The coins will be available for collection from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta. For further information, the public is kindly requested to contact the Malta Coins Distribution Centre by an e-mail to mcdc@centralbankmalta.org or by calling (+356) 2550 6007/6013. The Central Bank of Malta will issue the second in the five-year series of €2 commemorative coins highlighting milestones in Malta’s constitutional history.

The second coin, entitled “Majority Representation 1887” follows the first coin in the series, called the “First Elected Representatives – 1849” issued in 2011.

Malta acquired the right to elect its own representatives to the Council of Government following the 1849 Constitution. However, the elected members were only a minority on the Council, which was effectively controlled by the Governor, who represented the British Government, and by his nominated members. But political developments in continental Europe, which had led to the election of representative governments, were instrumental in generating a similar sentiment in Malta. This process culminated in the granting of the 1887 Constitution, through which the Maltese were allowed to elect the majority of members to the Council of Government.

The coin obverse (national side) was designed by the Maltese artist Ġanni Bonnici (b. 1932) and shows a jubilant crowd, with the Governor’s Palace in Valletta in the background. The coin reverse shows the €2 symbol, which is a common feature in all euro coins in this denomination. The coin was minted at the Royal Dutch Mint.

The coin was issued in circulation quality in rolls of 25 coins each, with each roll selling at the price of €70 (excluding postage and packing).

A limited amount of 5000 coins have been struck in proof quality and these sell at the price of €17 each (excluding postage and packing).
