The collector coin committee announces: A collector coin with the theme Peace and Security is realised on the basis of Tapio Kettunen’s proposal ”Cease fire, pigeons in the porthole”
(15th May, 2009)
The Collector Coin committee set by the Finnish Ministry of Finance arranged a public competition for the designing of the collector coin, and received a record-braking 72 proposals. The competition was carried out in two phases with the focus more on the views and message than the technical skill. The competitors were encouraged to look for new solutions and effects (form, colour, hole, other materials).

The jury decided that no first prize would be awarded. Instead the two best works would receive similar-sized prizes. These two works are: “Cease fire, pigeons in the porthole” (“Tuli seis, kyyhkyjä ampuma-aukossa”) by Tapio Kettunen and “It takes two”, a joint proposal by designer Mikko Järvenpää and ceramic artist Heini Riitahuhta. The jury noted that Kettunen’s work had depth and interpretation. The proposal contains beautiful details and leaves room for interpretation. All the markings are on the reverse side, which is an entirely new implementation for collector coins.

Third prize was awarded to Jukka Veistola for his proposal ”Live in peace – with all your neighbours” (”Elä rauhassa – kaikkien naapureittesi kanssa”). In addition, two other works were also rewarded: Henrik Gummerus’ proposal “Columbus” and Tero Lounas’ proposal “Sleep of the ark” (”Arkki uni”).

Artist Tapio Kettunen said the work was extremely interesting and different. “In my work, the pigeons bringing the peace message fly from the attackers’ porthole to the defenders’ side – sent by the attackers. Threat and hope are the main themes of the work. I hope these arouse ideas and provide inspiration for different and broader interpretations, than those connected with war and threats thereof”, describes Kettunen.

The following persons were members of the jury for the Peace and Security collector coin: as chairman CEO of Mint of Finland Ltd Maarit Aarnio-Sirviö, and as members Councellor Raine Vairimaa from the Ministry of Finance, docent Maria Lähteenmäki from the department of history at the Helsinki University, and curator of the Ateneum Art Museum Heikki Halme. As expert members acted Johanna Hyrkäs, Antti Immonen, Heli Kauhanen, and Minna Kukkonen. Export and marketing assistant Sinikka Ravander acted as secretary.

The competition proposals are on display at the Helsinki University of Art and Design during 25th - 29th May, 2009. The address is Hämeentie 135 C, Helsinki.

Collector coin “Peace and Security” gets its first strike by Martti Ahtisaari
A new coin set called “Ethical Collector Coins” launches
Mint of Finland Ltd. issued a collector coin for Peace and Security. At the publication event, President Martti Ahtisaari carried out the first strike for the new coin to be produced. The collector coin is the first member of the new coin set ”Ethical Collector Coins”. In addition, this is the first time in the history of Finland when a silver collector coin with a nominal value of 20 euros is issued.

The Ethical Collector Coins are inspired by themes relating to topical issues and phenomena of the moment. Themes for each collector coin are chosen by the Collector Coin committee set by the Finnish Ministry of Finance. The collector coin Peace and Security was designed by sculptor Tapio Kettunen whose proposal won the public design competition. A record number of 72 proposals entered into the competition.

President Ahtisaari signed the certificate of authenticity that includes a quote with the most important message of his speech at the Oslo Nobel Peace Prize ceremony: Peace is a matter of will.

Ahtisaari offered the following definition in a speech he gave during a plenary session in the Finnish Parliament: “Peace means, nevertheless, something more than societal order or the absence of war.
Peace is a second homeland and a source of power for those living in the middle of disorder and agitation. It is a state of mind where you can free yourself from feeling hopeless. Peace can reach the heart in everyone of us.”

“Peace and security is always a topical theme and suitable for launching a new coin set,” states Maarit Aarni-Sirviö, Mint of Finland’s CEO, adding that “we are glad that president Ahtisaari who is globally known to have led difficult peace negotiations is willing to appreciate this first strike of a coin that conveys such an important message. The Norwegian unit of our company was given the honour to produce the Nobel Peace Prize along with the medals that accompany it.”

The silver collector coin has a nominal value of 20 euros. Its diameter is 38.61 mm, weight 33.62 g and the maximum number of strikes used in coining is 15,000. You can order the Peace and Security collector coin from Mint of Finland’s official retailers.
