Saint Christopher is venerated as the
patron of teachers, pilgrims and travellers –
especially drivers, who place his image in
their cars to arrive safely to their
destinations. Saint Christopher was a
martyr originally called Reprobus.
According to a Christian legend he was a
Canaanite giant who, after being baptized,
helped travellers to cross a river by carrying
them on his shoulders. Once he found
himself carrying a child that was
exceptionally heavy. When he got to the
other bank, exhausted, the child said: “You
had on your shoulders not only the whole
world but Him who made it”. The name
Christopher, given him by little Jesus,
means “bearer of Christ”.
