Česká národní banka vyhlásila prosinci 2009 celostátní neomezenou anonymní soutěž na umělecký návrh pamětní stříbrné dvousetkoruny k 500. výročí narození významného renesančního nakladatele a tiskaře Jiřího Melantricha z Aventina. Uzávěrka soutěže proběhla dne 19. března 2010. Vyhlášení soutěže bylo veřejné, prostřednictvím ČTK a internetu. Členům Asociace umělců medailérů, uměleckým školám a výtvarníkům, kteří se již účastnili některé soutěže na české pamětní mince a mají o ně nadále zájem, jsou soutěžní podmínky zasílány přímo.

Předložené návrhy hodnotila dne 30. března 2010 Komise pro posuzování návrhů na české peníze. K věcné správnosti předložených se vyjadřovala odborná poradkyně prof. PhDr. Marie Bláhová z Filosofické fakulty v Praze. Soutěže se zúčastnilo 19 výtvarníků, kteří předložili celkem 28 návrhů budoucí mincí. Komise pro posuzování návrhů na české peníze provedla vyhodnocení soutěže ve třech soutěžních kolech. V prvním kole bylo vyřazeno 14 návrhů, a to z důvodu nepříliš zdařilých portrétů Jiřího Melantricha, nedostatečného vystižení jeho nakladatelské a tiskařské činnosti či pro výtvarné nedostatky v kompozici, písmu či modelaci. Ve druhém kole získalo odměnu šest návrhů, které lépe vystihovaly osobu a činnost Jiřího Melantricha a byly na vyšší výtvarné úrovni.

Do třetího kola postoupilo šest návrhů, které komise označila za tematicky nejvýstižnější a výtvarně nejlépe zpracované. První sníženou cenu a doporučení k realizaci od komise obdržel návrh pana Jana Smrže. Komise ve svém hodnocení u tohoto návrhu vyzvedla originální řešení lícní strany, dobře zvolené písmo a jednotu obou stran. Dále komise rozhodla o udělení dvou třetích cen. První připadla návrhu slečny Terezy Eisnerové za dobře vyřešenou kompozici lícní a rubové strany, které jsou v naprosté jednotě. Druhou obdržel MgA. Martin Dašek, u jehož návrhu komise ocenila především dobře pojednanou figurální část na líci návrhu. Dále komise ve třetím kole udělila tři mimořádné odměny, a to dalšímu návrhu slečny Terezy Eisnerové, návrhu akademického sochaře Michala Vitanovského a návrhu akademické sochařky Majky Wichnerové.

Bankovní rada na svém jednání dne 15. dubna 2010 potvrdila rozhodnutí komise a doporučila k realizaci návrh pana Jana Smrže. Předpokládaný termín emise mince je 15. června 2011.

The CNB is issuing a commemorative coin to mark the anniversary of the birth of Jiří Melantrich

The Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a commemorative silver coin to mark the anniversary of the birth of Renaissance publisher and printer Jiří Melantrich of Aventinum. The coin, with a face value of CZK 200, will be available for purchase as from 15 June.

The CZK 200 commemorative silver coin was designed by Jan Smrž. The main motif on the obverse side is a composition of five books, while the reverse side is dominated by a depiction of the title page of the Bible published by Jiří Melantrich of Aventinum in 1570.

The coin is minted in two quality versions. 7,900 pieces will be made in normal quality and 11,600 pieces will be proof quality coins with a polished field and a matt relief.

Jiří Melantrich of Aventinum (born Jiřík Černý) was a 16th century publisher. His first major work was a print of the Bible made in 1549, when he was still employed at the printing works of Bartoloměj Netolický. In the 1560s, as an independent publisher and printer, he published the famous Herbarium by Pietro Andrea Matthioli in Czech and German. The only surviving portrait of Melantrich is on the title page of the Bible he printed in 1570.

Commemorative silver coin to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jiří Melantrich of Aventinum

Jiří Melantrich of Aventinum (born Jiřík Černý) was a prominent 16th century printer and publisher. To mark the 500th anniversary of his birth, the Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a CZK 200 commemorative silver coin on 15 June 2011.

A total of 19 designers submitted 28 plaster models to the unlimited anonymous competition announced by the CNB in December 2009. The models were assessed by the Commission for the Evaluation of Designs for Czech Banknotes and Coins on 30 March 2010, with Marie Bláhová from the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague as expert adviser for the historical motifs. The design by Jan Smrž won first prize and was recommended for realisation. Second prize was not awarded and third prize went to the designs by Tereza Eisnerová and Martin Dašek. At its meeting on 15 April 2010 the Bank Board approved the realisation of the coin designed by Jan Smrž.

The Czech Mint struck coins of silver having a fineness of 0.925. Normal quality and proof quality coins differ in surface treatment and edge marking. Proof-quality coins have a highly polished field, a matt relief and a plain edge, while normal-quality coins have milled edges. The coin has a diameter of 31 mm, a weight of 13 g and a thickness of 2.2 mm.

The obverse side of the coin shows a composition of five books with Jiří Melantrich’s signet on the right. The name of the state “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” and the denomination and abbreviated monetary unit “200 Kč” are situated in the bottom part of the coin. Ornamental decorations complete the composition. The mark of the Czech Mint is at the upper edge of the coin.

The reverse side of the coin depicts the title page of the Bible published by Jiří Melantrich of Aventinum in 1570 with the publisher’s signet in the middle. The text “JIŘÍ MELANTRICH Z AVENTINA” and the years 1511–2011 are located above the title page of the Bible. The composition is again completed with ornamental decorations. The mark of the coin’s designer Jan Smrž, consisting of the letters JS, is placed at the bottom edge of the coin.

Each coin comes with a grey-brown catalogue card containing a description and the relief of the coin.
