Finnish landmarks celebrated with new coin series
Finland is filled with unique buildings and structures that carry great importance for the people living nearby. As a surprise for the end of 2012, the Mint of Finland will launch the Buildings of the Provinces coin series, in which a single building or structure from each of Finland's historical provinces will be immortalised. The provinces of Uusimaa and Lappi will be the first to receive their own coins, launched on 13.12.2012.
Traditionally, commemorative coins have depicted significant persons or events. However, this new coin series reminds us of the significance of buildings and structures for our identity and culture. The coins in the Buildings of the Provinces series depict various built landmarks, which often carry great symbolic meaning for the people who live nearby. Many of these landmarks have witnessed major historical events and, perhaps most importantly of all, each of them carries a unique message about Finland's past and the lives of our forefathers.

Symbolic meaning of building most important criterion
An invitational competition was organised for the artistic design of the coins' obverse. The participating artists could freely select the provincial building featured in the design. The design competition's winner was architect Petri Neuvonen, whose design received special praise from the judges for its pleasing composition and sound choice of subject matter.
”This series is about the historical provinces of Finland, the 'archetypical' provinces, as it were. This inspired me to select symbolically significant buildings that also highlight the diversity of the Finnish building stock”, says Petri Neuvonen.
The provinces of Lappi and Uusimaa will be the first to receive their own coins. The coin of Uusimaa depicts the Helsinki and Uspenski Cathedrals.
”I did not want to portray the subjects in the obvious manner, but rather find a new perspective on them. The coin of Uusimaa unites two architecturally different buildings and creates a dialogue between them. Helsinki Cathedral was designed by a German architect and Uspenski Cathedral by a Russian one, so these buildings also serve to illustrate the international character of Helsinki's architecture.”
Lappi's coin portrays the Jätkänkynttilä Bridge in Rovaniemi. The bridge's name was inspired by its two tall pillars, which evoke oblique lumberjack's candles ("jätkänkynttilä" in Finnish) when brightly lit. The bridge, built in 1989, is a fine example of how a new building can quickly rise to the status of important regional landmark.
”This is Finland's first cable stayed bridge. The Jätkänkynttilä Bridge fits the landscape fabulously and is located at the junction of two mighty rivers.”
Runs of 55,000 UNC quality coins and 10,000 proof quality coins will be minted of each provincial coin.
This coin series that commemorates buildings takes up the theme of the historical provincial coins launched earlier by the Mint of Finland and designed by Nora Tapper. The Buildings of the Provinces coins being released carry the same reverse, designed by Nora Tapper, as the previous provincial coins.

The “Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge” built in 1989 is currently regarded as Rovaniemi’s foremost landmark.
The bridge is named after its two tall columns which, with their bright lights, resemble lumberjack’s candles − logs sawn in two with a fire in between. A coffee pot won’t stay on top of these lumberjack’s candles, but they do illuminate the slopes of Ounasvaara hill and the surge of the River Kemijoki also during the darkest time of the year.
Coins are available separately packaged with glassy coating or in circulation coin quality, as well as in a bag that contains ten circulation quality coins.
Deliveries for orders of the Provincial Buildings coins will start at the end of week 51.
