The Sophie Mannerheim collector coin supports the New Children’s Hospital
The new collector coin, minted in honour of Sophie Mannerheim, celebrates the pioneer of Finnish nursing and, in a sense, also carries on her work, as the profits from the coin will be used in support of the New Children’s Hospital 2017 project.

The Mint of Finland and the New Children’s Hospital 2017 Support Association launched their cooperation on 26 March 2013 at the unveiling of the Sophie Mannerheim collector coin, which was presented at the event to Minister Elisabeth Rehn.
Planning is underway for a new children’s hospital in Helsinki to replace the obsolete premises of the Children's Hospital and Children's Castle. Collector coin enthusiasts as well as those who enjoy the beauty and high quality of Finnish products can now join the effort to build a new children’s hospital by purchasing a Sophie Mannerheim coin or the Arvo Ylppö collector coin released last year.
At the unveiling ceremony on 26 March, Paul Gustafsson, CEO of the Mint of Finland, and Anne Berner, chair of the New Children’s Hospital 2017 Support Association, provided more information about the cooperation.
“As a result of our cooperation, every Finn can participate in the building of the new and sorely needed children’s hospital with a donation commemorated by a magnificent collector coin. A traditional collector coin, made by hand in Finland, is a great fundraising product with enduring value. The company has a history of involvement in the fundraising of large-scale national projects that goes back all the way to the Olympics of 1952,” Paul Gustafsson explains.
“We are extremely glad that the Mint of Finland has struck two collector coins in honour of the ground-breaking work that has made world-class specialist paediatric care available to Finnish children today. We are particularly pleased with this partnership, thanks to which these collector coins will help generate the funds required to build the new children's hospital and thus enable the equal provision of top-class paediatric care in a worthy hospital in the future too. My thanks and congratulations go to Minister Elisabeth Rehn, who is a board member of the New Children's Hospital foundation and has, through her own work, made a significant contribution to the welfare of women and children throughout the world,” says Anne Berner, chairwoman of the New Children's Hospital 2017 foundation and support association.
Elisabeth Rehn told at the event that she is very interested in the efforts business world makes to help the children and enhance their position. The New Children's Hospital 2017 project and its partners are one example of this.
“My Father was a doctor, so from early on I was able to see how important high-quality healthcare is to people and the whole society, Rehn said.

A collector coin is a lasting memento
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sophie Mannerheim´s birth, the Mint of Finland is issuing a collector coin dedicated to Sophie Mannerheim. Sales of the coin will begin on 2 April 2013.
“Sophie Mannerheim’s life’s work is an expression of her unparalleled devotion to Finnish nursing. For every Sophie Mannerheim and Finnish Health Care collector coin purchased, EUR 5 will be donated in full for the construction of the new children’s hospital, Tapio Yli-Viikari, professor of the Aalto University and new chairman of the Collector Coin Committee told at the event.
An open competition, won by Tero Lounas, was organised for the coin’s design. In the coin designed by Lounas, Sophie Mannerheim’s love for children and her strong will to focus boldly on the future are depicted. The nominal value of the silver collector coin is EUR 10, and its mintage is 17,000.
The Mint of Finland’s second fundraising product benefiting the New Children's Hospital 2017 project is the Arvo Ylppö and Medicine collector coin, released in November 2012. The amount donated to the construction of the new children’s hospital for every purchased Arvo Ylppö coin is also EUR 5. More information on the Arvo Ylppö coin is available at http://www.mint.fi.
