Hungary to replace HUF 200 note with coin in 2009

Hungary's Monetary Council has decided on Monday to introduce a HUF 200 coin to replace the HUF 200 banknote, central bank (NBH) Governor András Simor announced at a press conference.

He said the coin would be more practical than the notes that generally need to be replaced every two years.

The bank plans to put the HUF 200 coins into circulation in the first half of 2009, Simor added. The HUF 200 notes are to remain in use until the end of next year.

The National Bank (MNB) is allowing the public to vote on the look of the Ft 200 coin to be introduced sometime next year. Voting is possible at http://www.forint.hu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and by telephone.

The coin will consist of two metals, a silver centre surrounded by a bronze ring.

The public can choose from images of a stork or a woodpecker, two protected flowers and the Chain Bridge or the new Megyeri motorway bridge.

Chain Bridge to feature on new Ft 200 coin

The National Bank has received some 200,000 votes for the Chain Bridge to appear on the tails side of the new Ft 200 coin. About half of the votes cast were for the bridge, which appeared on a shortlist of five symbols.
The stork received 18% of the ballot, the Megyeri Bridge 13%, while a protected bird and two plants shared the rest of the votes.

A Lánchíd lesz a 200 forintos érmén

Budapest, 2008. október 27. – A vártnál többen, csaknem kétszázezren vettek részt a Magyar Nemzeti Bank szavazásán, ahol a leendő 200 forintos érme képét lehetett kiválasztani. A szavazatok több mint felét a Lánchíd szerezte meg, így legrégebbi és legnépszerűbb Duna-hidunk szerepel majd legújabb érménken.

A két héten át tartó szavazáson a lakosság tetszését leginkább a Lánchíd (52%) nyerte el, majd a fehér gólya (18%) és a Megyeri-híd (13%) következik. Negyedik lett a fakopáncs (8%), utolsó előtti a cifra kankalin (6%), a sort pedig a kövér daravirág (3%) zárja.

A forint történetében először fordul elő, hogy egy pénzen szereplő motívumot azok választották ki, akik nap mint nap kézbe veszik majd. A szavazáson résztvevők magas száma azt mutatja, hogy a lakosság valóban fontosnak tartotta, hogy elmondhassa véleményét és részt vehessen az új 200-as kialakításában.

A papírpénzről érmére váltás hátterében elsősorban a nemzetgazdasági megtakarítás és az a hosszú távú jegybanki cél áll, hogy az MNB megkönnyítse a lakosság majdani átállását az euróra. Az érme leghamarabb 2009 első félévében kerülhet forgalomba. A kétszáz forintos bankjegy – várhatóan 2009 végéig – szintén törvényes fizetőeszköz marad.
